Chapter 13: Down

Petroc had said it from his knees, in front of the whole Dry.

"Toivo goes home with his grandmother. The sentence is not taken."

Nobody argued, and Mummu walked my brother out of the hall on her good arm.

Now the Captain's house was quiet, and Petroc stood in our bedroom in his church coat with his mouth set hard.

Neither of us had said a word since the Dry.

I sat on the edge of the bed and pulled the pins out of my braid.

All the way up the hill I had seen him go down on those boards and not get up.

I wanted to see it again, in a room with a door and nobody watching.

"Down," I said.

He went to his knees on the rag rug at my feet.

He did it at once, without a sound, and set his hands on his thighs.

He did not look astonished this time.

He looked up at me with his lips parted and his chest going hard.

I had meant it as a dare, and my pulse went wild.

"Take off my shoes," I said.

He unbuckled my church shoes and drew them off, one and then the other, and set them side by side.

He kissed the inside of my ankle.

"Did I tell you to kiss me?"

"No," he said.

"Do it again."

He kissed my ankle again, slowly, and heat dropped through my stomach.

"Now the coat," I said. "And the shirt. Stay on your knees."

He shrugged out of the black coat.

He undid the white church shirt with his big hands and let it fall behind him.

The long scar showed pale along his forearm, and the muscles of his chest were pulled tight, waiting.

"Good," I said.

He shut his eyes.

"Again," he said, very low.

"Good. That's good, Petroc."

A shudder went across his shoulders.

He reached for his belt.

I thought he meant to open his pants, and I was ready to tell him to wait.

Instead he pulled the leather out of the loops and buckled it around his own neck, loosely, with the tail hanging down his chest.

He lifted the tail and laid it in my hand.

"What are you doing?" I said.
