I Wed the Ruthless Alpha, and Now His Wolf Kneels to Me novel · Chapter 22 of 24

Chapter 22: Unlit

I did not give him a word.

I set the cold lamp down in the grass.

I took his face in both hands and kissed him in front of the whole Dry.

Then I took him home.

The house was dark when we came in, and the kitchen window held nothing but the pale sky over the lake.

It was nearly midnight, and the light would not go.

It lay gray and silver on the stairs and on the bedroom floor.

I stood in front of the old dresser under the window and unbuttoned my blouse, and he stood in the doorway and watched me.

"Nobody has to tell you anything now," I said.

"No."

"Nothing is on the sill."

"No," Petroc said, and his voice shook. "Nothing."

I dropped my blouse on the floor.

I took off my skirt and my underwear.

I sat up on the edge of the dresser, bare, with my heels hooked on the drawer pulls.

The wood was cool under me.

The pale sky behind my shoulders laid silver light along my skin.

He crossed the room slowly and went down on his knees on the rug in front of me.

I had said nothing.

He looked up from the floor with his hands loose on his thighs, and the pale light fell over his face.

His eyes had gone bright.

The wolf was up in him, with all its strength, and I could see it looking at me out of the gray-green.

It knelt anyway.

My throat went tight.

"You don't have to," I said.

"I know."

He put his hands behind his back.

I had not told him to.

He clasped them there, at the small of his back, and he leaned forward and set his mouth against the inside of my knee.

He kissed his way up my thigh, slowly, with his eyes on mine.

He kissed the inside of the other knee and worked up that thigh as well.

By the time he reached the crease I was panting.
