Chapter 25: Who Told Him

Cormac didn't answer him.

He didn't even turn his head.

He was looking at my hands.

An agent pushed Senan down into the back of a car and shut the door on his shouting.

The glass muffled it. Then the car pulled away, and the yard was quiet except for the creek.

"Ambulance," the woman in the windbreaker said. "Both of you. No arguments."

I argued anyway.

I lost.

They drove us across the river with the heat blasting and foil blankets crackling over us.

My fingers came back first, and they hurt so much I bit the blanket.

Cormac lay on the other stretcher with his eyes shut and his lips gray.

He'd given me more of the coat than he'd let me know.

At the hospital they put us in two beds behind one curtain, because I wouldn't let them take him anywhere else.

A nurse wrapped my hands in warm towels.

"Frostnip," she said. "You'll keep them. Him, I'm watching."

"He's too stubborn to lose a finger," I said.

Cormac opened one eye.

"I heard that."

At ten, Una came through the curtain.

She had Nessa on her hip and a bag of frozen peas in her free hand.

She threw the peas at me. They hit the blanket and slid off onto the floor.

"Six o'clock," she said. "Six o'clock and no call. Do you know what I did at six o'clock?"
