I Woke Up at the Altar and Said No to the Mob Heir Who Let Me Die, but He Remembers Too novel · Chapter 32 of 40

Chapter 32: Una's Inspection

I told him on Sunday, at the boatyard, while he had his arms inside an outboard motor.

"Una's coming Saturday."

"Good."

"For the whole weekend."

He took his arms out of the motor.

"To inspect me."

"To inspect you."

He wiped his hands on a rag.

"Do I get to study?"

"No."

She arrived at ten on Saturday morning with a suitcase and a cooler of her mother's stew.

Under her arm was a cardboard box with ANCHOR written on the side.

She set the box on my cutting table.

She didn't open it.

"After," she said. "First, work."

She took a pair of men's suit trousers out of her suitcase and threw them at Cormac.

He caught them against his chest.

"My ex-husband's," she said. "He left them when he left. They need to come up an inch and a half with a proper blind hem."

Cormac looked at the trousers. Then at me.

"Don't look at her," Una said. "She can't help you. I'm timing you."

He'd never hemmed anything in his life.

He'd rebuilt my mother's machine down to the bobbin case. He knew what every part of it did.

He just didn't know what to do with cloth.

He measured three times. He pinned it crooked. He pinned it again.

He sat at my mother's machine with his knees up around the table.
