I didn't open it.

Una would have killed us both.

I knocked, very softly, twice.

The cot creaked on the other side.

"Orla?" His voice was right against the wood. He'd been awake.

"Don't open it. You're not allowed to see me."

"I'm not opening it."

I sat down on the bottom step with my back against the door.

I heard him sit down on the floor on the other side. The door moved a little as he leaned on it.

"Bad dream?" he said.

"Not a dream. I remembered something."

He was quiet. He waited.

"Our first wedding night," I said. "The study door."

There was a long silence on the other side.

"I locked it," he said. "So you'd hear."

"I heard."

"I know. It's on the list."

The shop was dark around him. I could hear a bus go by on Dorchester Avenue, the first one of the morning.

"Is this one locked?" I asked.

"There's no lock on this door," he said. "I checked when Una put me in here. I wanted to know."

"Why?"

"So I could tell you, if you ever asked."

I put my hand flat on the wood.

On the other side, I felt the door shift, very slightly.

"Tell me something," I said. "So I can go back to sleep."

"Tomorrow I'm going to look at you," he said. "The whole way up the aisle. From the doors to the altar. I'm not going to look at anything else."
