Chapter 5: The Lawyer

The lawyer's office was on the fourteenth floor of a glass building on Main Street.

Lana had found her in under an hour, by calling the one woman in town who owed her a favor.

"She did my aunt's estate," Lana said in the elevator. "She's mean and she's expensive. You'll like her."

I did not own a suit.

I wore my work jacket with the split seam and boots with salt stains up the sides.

The receptionist looked at me and then at the clock.

Lana put the cookie tin on the front desk and said, "He has an appointment."

The lawyer came out herself.

She was fifty, silver-haired, with reading glasses on a chain and a handshake.

She led us into a conference room with a view of the whole river.

"Show me."

I opened the tin and slid the ticket across the table.

She did not touch it.

She picked up a pen, turned the ticket over with the cap, and read my signature.

"You signed it?"

"Lana told me to."

"Then Lana is smarter than most of my clients." She looked up. "Who else knows?"

"Nobody. Her and me."

"Your family?"

"They think I stole from my job."

"Do you want them to know?"

"No."

She nodded once.

"Good. Here is what happens. In Ohio, you can claim through a trust and stay out of the press. I will form the trust today. The ticket goes to the lottery office in a sealed envelope, with me, in my car, by four o'clock."

"Can they take it from me?"

"Mr. Briggs, there is a bank on Third Street that could be robbed by a man who isn't careful. The ticket will be safer than the bank."
