Chapter 18: Lorne's POV

Lorne's POV

I had planned the speech for nine days.

When she knocked on my hotel door that night, I lost every word of it.

She stood in the corridor in her therapist's scrubs with her braid half undone and a bag of ice in one hand.

"Your leg will swell after today," Wynne said. "Sit."

I sat.

She knelt on the carpet and propped my foot on the hotel pillow.

Her hands settled on my calf, warm and sure.

I had walked forty feet that morning in front of three officers and my father.

None of it had cost as much as holding still now.

"You don't have to do that," I said.

"I know."

"I have something to give you first."

I took the folder off the desk and put it on the bed beside her.

She did not open it.

"It's the deed to Cold Harbor House," I said. "My grandmother left it to me. The stables, the land, every acre. It's yours, as of this afternoon. I had the lawyer draw it up."

Her hands stopped.

"Lorne."

"It's the least of it. If you want the title to the farm in Virginia, I'll find a way to buy that, too, when the Haldane sale goes to auction."

"Lorne."

"I put you out of a house at midnight," I said. "I'd like you to own one."

She looked at the folder for a long moment.

Then she slid it back along the bed toward me with two fingers.

"No," she said, gently.

"Wynne."

"I've lived in houses in other people's names all my life. I don't want you to give me the one you threw me out of."

I had no answer for that.

"I don't want a gesture," she said. "Last week someone handed me a jet, and a house is the same kind of present. It doesn't tell me anything about you."
