Chapter 5: The Apology
Edgar Haldane came into the drawing room at exactly ten, with his hat in his hand.
His face wore a look of grave sorrow.
Bree came behind him in a black dress, with her hair pulled straight back.
The sergeant announced them and then stood against the wall with his arms folded.
I was standing by the window, a pace behind the colonel's sofa, in the clean gray scrubs I wore for sessions.
Edgar saw me and did not blink.
"Colonel Strickland," he said. "I can't tell you how sorry my family is."
"Sit down, Mr. Haldane," Lorne said.
He had both canes against the sofa arm and his bad leg stretched out before him, and he had not offered a hand.
Edgar sat.
Bree perched on the edge of the armchair and began to cry immediately.
"I'll be direct," Edgar said. "On the night of the third, one of our company vehicles was taken from our drive without permission."
"I know the report," Lorne said.
"I was ashamed to say who took it." He drew a long breath. "The car was taken by a young woman we raised from a child. We took her in out of charity, and we gave her work in our home."
Lorne's head turned a quarter inch.
