Chapter 21: Fourteen Takes
The last scene of Hollowmere took fourteen takes, and for the first twelve nothing went wrong that a person could have prevented.
On the sixth stair, the Earl sat with a cup on the step beside him.
Two stairs below, the brother stood holding a tray, and a boom hung over them both.
Dorian's left hand was down by his side, hidden from the lens by the banister.
Kit's right hand was also down, and the gap between the two was a matter of a few inches of oak.
"Take one," said Vera.
Dorian said the first line, and smiled.
"Cut," said Vera.
"It was the line about the spoon," said Dorian.
"I couldn't help it."
"Again."
In take two the tray rattled, because Kit's hand had decided to be nervous without consulting him.
In take three the boom threw a shadow across the Earl's face and made him look like a man wearing a tea towel.
In take four, at the word brother, a horse in the yard let out a long whinny.
The whole crew turned to look at the window.
"That's the one from behind the stables," said Kit.
