Chapter 24: Twenty Feet Tall
On Sunday the queue for Frame Club ran out the door and halfway down the street.
Isla stood at the box office tearing tickets by hand.
She had not told anyone what she was screening, and she would not tell me.
"You'll sit in the third row," she said. "On the aisle."
"Where else?"
"Don't be smart. Sit."
I sat.
The seat was old red velvet with a worn patch on the arm, and it fit.
Around me the house filled.
A woman from the foyer queue waved.
The nurse and the bin lorry man took the row behind, with a bag of popcorn between them from the machine that had come back from the dead.
The grips from Brooklyn had flown over on a cheap fare and sat in a row at the back, in clean shirts, looking scrubbed and shy.
The one with the huge forearms lifted a hand.
At two o'clock Isla came down the aisle in her good green cardigan and stopped at the front.
"Every week I show one clip," she told them.
"This week, I'm showing a short film."
A murmur ran through the room.
"It's twelve minutes long. It was made three years ago on a borrowed camera, in a rented kitchen, for a budget of sixty dollars." She looked down the rows, and found me. "Nobody has seen it as it was meant to be seen. I'd like you to see it twenty feet tall."
The lights went down.
The projector hummed in the booth above the back row.
The screen filled with a kitchen.
It was the first one, with the cheap lamps and the pancakes burning, before Dennis, before the sponsors, before the number in the corner.
Demi stood at the stove in a grey sweater, young and laughing and nervous.
