Chapter 24: Transport Bay
Jesse pulled the tag off the springs so hard the wire cut his glove.
The squad boss filled the cell doorway behind him.
"Jesse. Talk to me."
"He's not in custody anywhere," Jesse said. "He's in shipping."
"Shipped where?"
"Not yet," Jesse said. "So we cut the fence now."
They came around the back of the north wing with the fire glowing behind the trees.
The second fence had no guard on it now.
The squad boss cut it with the bolt cutters off his line pack.
On the far side of the building a roll-up door stood open.
A box truck was backed up to the dock with its rear door raised.
Sandbags were stacked along the bottom of the bay door against the rain that never came.
One guard stood on the dock smoking, watching the orange on the ridge.
"Evacuation, buddy," the squad boss said, in his biggest voice. "Fire's at the fence line. Everybody to the gym. Now."
The guard looked at the ridge, and then at six foot five of red beard and yellow shirt.
He dropped his cigarette and went.
Jesse went up into the truck.
A plywood crate on a pallet, long as a man, with holes drilled along the sides.
