Chapter 29: Waiting Room
Jesse reached inside his yellow shirt.
The sandwich bag was still there, soft and warm from his skin, with one bloody thumbprint on the plastic now.
He put it flat against the glass.
"That's him," he said. "Put me down as next of kin to that."
The clerk read it through the window.
STATE OF MONTANA. CERTIFICATE OF DEATH.
"Sir, this says he's dead."
"He's on your table with a bullet in him. Does he look dead?"
"I don't make the rules."
"Then who's going to sign for him?"
A door banged open behind her.
A surgeon in blue scrubs came through it, pulling her mask down.
"Who's here for the helicopter? Big guy, through-and-through under the left clavicle?"
"Me."
"Are you family?"
The clerk opened her mouth.
"Yes," Jesse said.
The surgeon looked at the blood up to his elbows.
"Good enough. He's going in now. He's lost a lot, and he's stubborn, and he keeps asking for someone called Jesse."
"That's me."
"Then sit down, Jesse, and don't leave."
She went back through the door.
Jesse sat down.
He didn't stay sat.
At five the ambulances started coming in from the Peninsula.
