Chapter 30: The Hearing
"He's right."
The voice came from inside the room, hoarse, through the half-open door.
Gideon had pushed himself up on one elbow in the bed, with the tube still in his nose.
"I signed them," he said. "Every one."
The lawyer smiled at him through the glass, the polite smile of a man who'd won.
"Thank you, Mr. Strake. That saves us all some time."
"Tell your client I'll see him in court."
"You'll see him from the wrong table, I'm afraid."
The lawyer walked away down the hall, nodding to the families.
Nobody nodded back.
The Clallam County courthouse in Port Angeles had one big courtroom with wood paneling and bad lights.
Eleven days later, it was full by eight in the morning.
The families had the first three rows.
The crew had the back wall, twenty yellow shirts standing.
Ollie sat in the second row next to his mother, in a borrowed tie.
Twenty-Two sat on his other side, too big for the bench.
Luke sat with the other Zeros in suits that didn't fit, all of them with fresh haircuts, all of them looking at the door.
Jesse sat beside Luke.
They brought Gorham in at nine.
