Chapter 7: First Ride

I walked past Coy and didn't answer.

I didn't let him see it land.

But it rode home with me in my wet socks, the whole mile, and it sat down at the kitchen table when I did.

Gran put a mug of coffee in front of me and looked at my face.

"Jessup boy said something," she said.

"Jessup boy always says something."

"Mm." She went back to her biscuits. "Rance is in the barn. Pretending to fix a gate."

He was not fixing a gate.

He was standing in the barn aisle with a hammer in his hand, staring at the far wall.

He knew I'd come. He'd have smelled me crossing the yard.

"Coy says you planned this," I said.

He didn't turn around.

"Coy says a lot of things."

"He said you wanted me out of his house long before I left it."

Rance set the hammer on a post.

Then he turned and looked at me, and his face was hard to read in the barn shadow.

"I did want you out of his house," he said. "Since Lander. Since I watched you stand at the back of his barn with your head down while his mother talked about you like a heifer."

"That's not what he meant."

"That's what I'm telling you."

"Did you plan it?"

He was quiet a beat too long.

"I came to that wedding to watch my sister marry a man she hates," he said. "I didn't plan for you to walk across that barn. Nobody could've planned that."

It sounded true. Every word of it.

But there was something else under it.

"You're not telling me all of it," I said.

"No," he said. "Not today."

I should have pushed.

I was tired, and my feet were cold, and the way he said it made me think it was about his father.

So I let it go.

At dusk I went and got the grulla.
