Chapter 23: Ice Storm
"Then I won't fail," I said.
Ozias didn't answer that.
He opened the bottom drawer of his desk and took out a phone in a cracked black case.
"The guards brought me Ket's phone the morning they took her," he said. "I read that text a month ago."
I stared at him.
"Rut's late, go to bed. From my son's number, at eight minutes to midnight." He set it on the blotter beside the receipt. "I thought Judd had sent his keeper away so the room would be empty for you."
"So you sat on it."
"I sat on it because it pointed at you." He pushed the phone across the desk. "Take it to the Gathering. I'm not the one judging."
I put it in my jacket next to my own.
At the door he spoke again.
"Go out the way you came in," he said. "The cellar latch."
I turned around.
"You knew about the latch?"
"I've known since June." He picked up the whiskey at last. "I was waiting for you to fix it."
