Chapter 16: Supply Room

I put the spatula down very carefully so I wouldn't throw it.

"The Christmas program," I said. "In the gym. With every kid in the school on the risers."

"Every year since before I was born," Roscoe said.

Posy was standing in the kitchen doorway in her socks.

She'd heard the name.

She looked at her father's face and then at his chest, and she didn't say good morning.

On Monday Bonnie was back at Alder Creek Elementary with her VOLUNTEER lanyard and a tray of pumpkin bars for the office.

I saw her through the glass doors when I walked Posy in.

The secretaries were hugging her.

Bonnie saw me over the secretary's shoulder.

She gave me a little wave with her fingers.

I took Posy straight past the office to her classroom and put her hand in her teacher's.

Then I went back to the principal.

"Keep her out of the first-grade room," I said.

The principal rubbed her eyes.

"Mrs. Ketchum, the county closed it. I don't have grounds."

"You don't need grounds to give a volunteer a different job."

"Give her the music room. Keep her away from my daughter."
