Chapter 11: Sleeve

I got out of the club without remembering the stairs.

The valet held the door and kept his eyes on my shoes.

The cold hit my face, and I walked into the parking lot with my keys in my fist.

I could not get the key into the door.

The lock kept sliding away, and my hand wouldn't hold still.

"Gwyneth."

I knew the voice.

Bruce was leaning against a dark sedan three spaces down, in a coat and no tie.

I had texted him that afternoon.

If you're free tonight, could someone know where I am?

He had written back one line: Which parking lot.

"You came."

"I said I would." He pushed off the car. "Give me the keys."

"I can drive."

"Your hands say no."

I looked down.

They were shaking so hard the key chain rang.

I gave him the keys.

He opened my passenger door, and I sat down, and he drove my car with the heater on high.

Neither of us spoke until we passed the first stoplight.

"I told them everything," I said. "In front of the board. In front of the aldermen. I told them."

"I heard," he said. "The valet had a phone."

"What?"

"It's already online."

I laughed, and the laugh went wrong, and I pressed my hand over my mouth.

He pulled into my mother's driveway and shut the engine off.

The kitchen light was on.
