Chapter 9: The Shower

Hannah's POV

The baby shower was the next Saturday afternoon, in Tim's new loft in Tribeca.

I went because Colter had been invited and I had not.

"Directors get an invitation," he said in the car. "Directors may bring a guest."

"You want me to walk in there."

"I want him to see you walk in there."

I wore the green dress Tim had once said made me look expensive.

I carried a small gift bag.

The loft had white balloons and a banner that said WELCOME, LITTLE CORBIN.

About forty people stood around with plates, most of them from the executive floor.

The conversation stopped when I came through the door, and then it started again in lower voices.

Sienna was in a rocking chair by the window, in blue, with a sash across her stomach.

She saw me and her smile held.

Tim stood beside her, and his face did something quick and ugly before he made it pleasant.

"Hannah," he said. "That's a surprise."

"Colter invited me."

"I'm sure he did."

Colter was already shaking a vice president's hand and did not turn around.

I walked across the room with all those eyes on my back.

I stopped in front of the rocking chair.

"Congratulations," I said.

"Thank you." Sienna put her hand on her stomach. "That means a lot, after everything."

I held out the bag.

She took it, and looked inside, and her face went blank.

I had put in a single safety pin.

"You left it in my hem on Thursday," I said. "I thought you might need it."

It was very quiet.

Somebody's fork touched a plate.

Sienna's cheeks went red, and she pushed the bag onto the side table.
