Chapter 20: On His Knees

"Kneel," I said.

We were in the middle of his bedroom, still in our dinner clothes, with the door shut behind us and the lamp off.

City light came through the window in pale squares.

Cal stood very still.

"Penelope."

"You knelt for him."

"I know."

"Now kneel for me."

I watched it go through him.

I watched the flare of his nostrils and the muscle in his jaw, and the slow, deep flush that spread under his beard.

He had knelt on that floor.

Now he looked at me and his eyes were wet and black.

He sank to his knees on the carpet in front of me.

He put his hands on his thighs.

He bowed his head.

I stood over him and pressed my fingers into his hair and closed them.

"Look at me."

He looked up.

"Say who you kneel for."

"You."

"Say it again."

"You. Only you."

My heart was going so hard that I could hear it in my ears.

I had never done this.

I had never wanted to, until I saw what it was to him.

Then I felt the thick dark-blond weight of his hair in my hand, and all that power waiting for me to say what to do.

"Unzip me," I said.

He reached behind me and drew down the zipper of my dress.

It slid off my shoulders and fell, and he did not touch more of me than I had told him to.

I stood in my underwear and heels.

"Take them off."

He took off my heels, one at a time, with his big hand cupping each of my ankles, and set them aside.

"The rest."

His fingers hooked in the lace at my hips and drew it down.

He kissed the crease of my thigh as it passed his mouth, and I tugged his hair.

"Did I say kiss?"

"No."

"No what?"

"No, ma'am."

I laughed, short and shaken, and the sound of it startled both of us.
