Chapter 6: Vane's Price

I did not touch the tablet.

"They miss me," I said. "Strange. Nobody in Howling Bay has called me in six weeks."

"Winifred is a busy woman." Vane put the tablet down. "But she is also generous, and so am I."

He slid a plain white envelope across the table.

It was thick.

"Five thousand a month," he said. "For very little. Mr. Crane is a private man. I'd like to know which lanes he is studying, who he meets, what he says on the phone."

"You want me to spy on him."

"I want you to be a friend to the people who have been good to you."

"Nobody in that pack was ever good to me."

"Winifred will be glad to hear you say so." He smiled again. "She mentioned you have debts. And no address."

I looked at the envelope.

Five thousand dollars was more than I had held in my hands in my whole life.

I thought about my room paid until Friday, and the two lines on the test.

Then I thought about Dashiell saying that night did not happen, in his flat voice, and how much I wanted to hit him.

None of that made me want to sell him to this man.

"Mr. Vane," I said. "Put your offer in writing, and I'll read it out to Mr. Crane myself."

His smile stayed where it was.

"Do," said a voice from the doorway.

Dashiell stood in the open boardroom doors, with two of the directors behind him who had come back for their folders.

He had been there for a while.

Vane rose and buttoned his jacket, unhurried.

"Dashiell. I was only welcoming your new girl."

"Take your envelope," Dashiell said. "You'll want it for the next person."
