Chapter 14: Ask Me in a Week
"Say the rest of it," I said. "All of it."
Orin turned from the rail and faced me, in the rain that blew under the porch roof.
"I said you'd go back to him. I said it on the dock, and I meant it."
"Because they always do."
"Because I've watched it happen. My cousin's wife went back four times." He kept his eyes on mine. "A man kneels, a baby's coming, and the money's in his house."
"And you decided that for me."
"Yes."
"You kept your hands off me because you had already made up your mind how it would end."
"Yes."
"Nobody asked me, Orin."
His jaw worked.
"I would have liked to be asked," I said. "Just once this month, by someone."
The porch boards creaked under his boots.
"Come out to the truck," he said. "You can yell at me in there. Maeve's got her face on the kitchen window."
I looked back.
Maeve dropped the curtain.
He opened the passenger door for me and I climbed in, in his enormous coat, with the belly bumping the dash.
He got in on the other side and started the engine for the heater.
Rain drummed on the roof, and the windows fogged.
The cab smelled like bait and coffee and wet wool.
"All week I thought it was pity," I said.
"It was never pity."
"The wood. The chowder. The towel."
"It was never pity, Gwendolyn."
"Then what was it?"
"Careful," he said.
His voice was low and rough.
His hand was on the gearshift, and I saw that it was not steady.
I told myself it was cold, since the heater had barely started.
