Chapter 15: Unstable
A man in a gray raincoat served the papers at nine, while Maeve was still holding the photographs.
"Gwendolyn Brannigan Prescott?" he said.
"Yes."
He handed me a thick envelope and went back to his car without another word.
I read it standing in the doorway.
It was a petition to the family court, filed by Eleanor Prescott as the baby's grandmother.
It said I was unstable and had left my husband without cause, and that I had taken up with a man of questionable record.
It listed the six photographs by number.
The hearing was in nine days.
"A man of questionable record," Maeve said, over my shoulder. "He has one parking ticket from 2019."
"Lorna's line from the road."
"She took his picture to say it."
"And Eleanor's lawyers paid someone to sit in a parking lot and watch me kiss him."
Maeve put the photographs face down on the table, one at a time, and her hands were shaking.
"I'm going to take them to the hospital lawyer," she said. "I'm going to..."
"No."
"Gwen."
"There's a dinner tonight," I said. "The Foundation board, in the private room at the Harbor Grand. Eleanor chairs it. Leander's name is on the guest list, and so is mine."
"Yours?"
"Eleanor mailed me the card so she could seat me at the far end and make a point of it. I put it in the drawer on Monday."
Maeve stared at me.
"You are thirty-four weeks pregnant."
"I'm going to sit in a chair," I said. "That is all."
Orin came across the road at noon, and I showed him the petition.
He read it standing, the way he did everything, with his hat in one hand.
When he finished, he put it down very carefully.
"I'll stay away from you until the hearing," he said.
"No."
"They've got pictures. If it's me that's the reason..."
