Chapter 18: The Press
Victor sat on that stair for ten minutes.
We watched every one of them.
He did not touch Dale.
He did not call anyone.
He watched the hand on the marble move once more, and then he watched it stop.
At 2:42 he stood, reached into the dead man's coat, took out a phone, and put it in his pocket.
Then he closed Dale's eyes with two fingers and went up the stairs, tapping his cane.
Margot did not say anything for a long time.
She sat very straight in my shirt, with her hands flat on the table.
"I called him from the mezzanine," she said at last. "I said, I think he's dead. And he said, 'Go home, darling, he's gone.' He sent his car."
"He knew."
"He knew Dale was not gone."
Her voice was so flat it frightened me.
