Chapter 20: The Notebook

My messenger bag sat on her kitchen chair, unzipped.

The black notebook lay on top of it, open to the first page.

I had written it on the Sunday after the roof, in a cheap diner, with a ballpoint pen that skipped.

Margot had read it standing up.

I could tell, because the page had a thumbprint in the corner, and she was still holding the cover.

"I went to your bag this morning for a charger," she said. "While you were buying coffee."

"Margot."

"Page one is my name."

She read it out loud, very evenly.

"'Margot Langhorn. The CFO. His one soft spot. Get close. Dinner at his house. Her keycard. The ledger on six. Make her trust me, then take the ledger, then ruin them both.'"

She turned the page.

"There's a drawing of the building."

"I made that before I met you."

"That's supposed to help?"

I shut my mouth.

She laid the notebook on the table with great care.

"On the roof you said I was the best invoice you ever approved," I said. "I wrote that line down on Sunday. I wrote down everything you said, and I called it material."
