Chapter 23: Margot
VanBuskirk cleared Margot at nine the next morning, in a room with a coffee machine that did not work.
She did it in four sentences.
"The district attorney has seen the full footage. Mr. Schuler held you, you pulled away, and he fell. No charge."
Margot's shoulders went down an inch.
"The bank has your signature samples and his. Forty-one forgeries traced to his hand. You'll testify against your grandfather, and you'll be a witness, not a defendant."
"Thank you."
"Don't thank me. Thank the camera." VanBuskirk turned her cold, tired eyes on me. "You, Mr. Donovan, deleted a file from a cloud account under a warrant."
"Yes."
"That's tampering. I can write it as a misdemeanor or a felony, and I am a woman who is very tired."
"Misdemeanor, I hope."
"It will cost you a fine and sixty hours picking up trash in a vest." She almost smiled. "I'd wear the grey. It slims."
I took it.
I would have taken worse.
I pleaded to the misdemeanor that Friday, in a borrowed tie, and the judge did not look up.
