Chapter 32: The Plaza
"Hold it like a coffee cup," I said. "Not like a snake."
Twelve first-year apprentices stood in a row on a beam two feet off the floor of the training yard behind the union hall.
Six young women and six young men, in brand-new boots, holding their arms out.
It was April, and cold, and the first class I'd ever taught.
"Eyes on the end of the beam," I said. "Never your feet. Your feet know where they are."
One girl at the far end froze.
Nineteen, red braid, knuckles white on the tag line.
I walked out along the beam to her, the way I'd walked out on a plank once for a man who didn't deserve it.
"What's wrong?"
"I'm going to fall."
"You're two feet up. If you fall, you'll land on your pride. Everybody does."
She laughed, shaky.
"Look at the end of the beam. Not at me. Walk to it."
She walked to it.
When she got there, eleven other apprentices cheered.
My old apprentice stood at the side of the yard with his arms folded and a second-year sticker on his hard hat.
