Chapter 14: Harmless

Camille rang Megan's doorbell at seven that night, with a duffel bag and a face scrubbed raw.

Megan opened the door and stood in it.

"No," she said.

"Megan, please."

"I have a rolling pin in the hall closet and a night shift tomorrow. I'm not tired yet."

"Let her talk," I said from the stairs.

Megan looked back at me for a long moment, then stepped aside without taking her eyes off Camille.

Camille set the bag down in the hall and did not sit.

"I won't ask you to forgive me," she said. "I'd have hated myself if I asked."

"Good. Say it."

She took a breath, and her chin shook.

"I wanted your life, Lena."

Megan made a noise in her throat.

"Not Dylan," Camille said. "I never loved Dylan. I wanted to be the one people drove up for. Megan moved your couch on her day off. Your boss kept your job open when your mom died. The dogs at the clinic cry when you leave."

She wiped her face with her wrist.

"Nobody ever drove up for me. I thought if I stood where you stood, it would happen to me too."

"It doesn't work that way," I said.

"I know that now. It doesn't work if you take it."

She reached into her coat and took out her phone.

"There's more. It isn't only me."

She held it out, and I took it.

The thread was with a contact saved as Cynthia A., and it started in April.

Cynthia had written to her first.

"Camille, dear. Dylan will need someone sensible. You are so good for him. You won't ask him for things."

Further down: "Seat C. at the head, beside D. Wear the cream. Do not look at L., and do not warn her. It's kinder this way."
