Chapter 20: Your Father

Harrison's POV

My father's handwriting had gotten worse in his last week, and it took me three tries to read the first line.

I read it out loud anyway.

"Harrison. I am writing this on a Tuesday, because Cynthia thinks I sleep on Tuesdays."

Somebody at the table made a small, wet sound that was almost a laugh.

I kept going.

"If you are reading this at all, it means she has kept it from you, and I was right to be afraid. I should have said these things to your face. I am a proud old man and I waited too long."

My voice did not shake, and I had not expected that.

Lena had her hand flat on the cloth beside mine, not touching it, close enough that I could feel it there.

"I have changed my papers. The house and the shore under it are yours, outright, not through the company. My lawyer holds the signed page and my oldest friend witnessed it."

I lifted my eyes.

The board chair had put down his fork.

"That's true," he said quietly. "Walter's lawyer called me last week, about a page he had been told not to file. I thought it was a mistake."

"I told him to wait for my word," Cynthia said.

Her voice was perfectly pleasant, and her hand had gone white on the stem of her glass.

I looked back at the page.

"Cynthia may live here as long as she is kind to you. If she is not, she goes. She has told me she means to put Dylan in your chair. I have told her no. She will not listen to me, so I am telling you."

Dylan had not moved.

"Do not give him the chair. He is not a bad boy, Harrison. He is a soft one, and that is my doing, because I gave him everything and asked for nothing. He cannot carry it. Do not let him try."
