Chapter 6: Table One

Megan zipped me into a dark red dress in the back of Harrison's car, because she refused to let me arrive at a gala in black.

"You look like a woman who owns the building," she said.

"I look like a woman who owes your friend a dry cleaning bill," I said.

"Chin up."

She would not come inside.

"I'm not going to a party for the people who hurt my sister," she said. "I'll be in the parking lot with a thermos and a rolling pin."

The gala was in a ballroom on the top floor of a downtown hotel.

Four hundred people stood in gold light, and a man with a camera shouted, "Mrs. Trelawny! Over here!"

I stopped walking, and I realized he meant me.

Harrison's hand settled at the small of my back.

"Smile at the left one," he said quietly. "He's the paper that won't run anything cruel."

I smiled at the left one.

We passed through a room full of black jackets and sequins, and every head turned.

"They're all watching your hand," I murmured.

"Yes," Harrison said. His mouth came close to my ear, and his voice was low and even.

"They're watching my hand on your back. I would like it somewhere else. I'm going to spend the whole dinner deciding where."

My feet stopped on their own.

He kept walking another half step, and then he stopped too, and looked at me.

"Mrs. Trelawny," he said, in his normal voice. "You've gone quiet."

"I'm fine," I said. My voice came out strange. "I'm just reading the program."

"It's on the other side of the room."

"Yes," I said. "I can read very far."
