Chapter 8: Breakfast on First

Harrison's POV

I left her asleep at twenty to six, because Cynthia had texted at twelve minutes past five.

"Breakfast. Alone. The place on First."

I stood in the bedroom doorway for longer than I should have.

Lena slept with one arm over her head and her hair across the pillow, and the red dress lay on the floor where I had dropped it.

I took my shoes in my hand so the floor would not wake her.

Cynthia had taken a table at the back of the café, with a pot of tea and nothing else in front of her.

She had put on her pearls.

"Sit," she said. "You look tired."

I sat.

"Let's be sensible," she said, and poured a cup for me that I did not touch. "It was a very good performance. The board is impressed, and so am I. But it was a performance."

"It was a wedding."

"It was a girl from Tacoma who works in an animal clinic and a stolen moment on a porch. Your father would have laughed."

"My father would have asked what she wanted for her forty-one thousand dollars," I said.

Cynthia's smile held.

"Here is what I propose. You have the marriage quietly set aside. I will see that she is looked after. A house, a sum. Dylan keeps the partnerships and you keep the chair until the vote, and the board sees a family that handled a difficult moment well."

"No."

"Harrison."

"No," I said. "She gets the forty-one thousand from Dylan's own hand. She keeps the name. If you send anyone to her clinic, or her apartment, or her sister, I'll know who it was."
