Chapter 20: One Condition

Darius found Arthur alone in the study at eleven, with one lamp on and the fire out.

The old man sat in his wing chair with a blanket over his knees and the crayon harbor open on his lap.

"Close the door," Arthur said.

Darius closed it and stayed standing.

Down the hall someone was running a bath for the twins, and he could hear Elsie laughing at something the nurse said.

It was the first time he had heard her laugh in that house.

"Sit down, Darius. You make me tired."

"I'd rather say this on my feet, sir."

Arthur waited.

"I need to tell you what I did with it," Darius said.

"I know."

"You know I brought you the note. You don't know I never checked the paper. I read it standing up and I believed it, because that was easier than believing she'd left me with no word at all."

His voice was steady, and his hands were not.

Arthur's good hand went still on the drawing.

"I found her in April, sir. I sat on that for five months," Darius said. "I let you sit in this room all summer and I said nothing, because I was afraid she'd say what the note said."

The clock ticked.

"That's all of it. You can have my resignation in the morning."

Arthur looked at him for a long time.

When he spoke, it was slow, and each word was worked out of him.
