Chapter 13: The Envelope
Mr. Okerlund did not get down off the tailgate.
He is a big, quiet man with engine oil worked into every line of his hands.
He looked at his son.
"Dad, it's late," Ansel said.
"It's eight-forty."
"It's late for this."
"Then it's late for what you should've said to her a week ago."
Ansel went completely still.
Mr. Okerlund turned the envelope over once and held it out to me.
"Lottie, I've known you since you had a cast on your arm and an opinion about it."
"Yes, sir."
"Ansel's going to be sore at me for this. Take it anyway."
"Dad."
"She's eighteen," his father said. "She can read."
I took it.
My hands were still warm from the Dolly, and the paper felt very cold.
Inside were two sheets.
The first had the University of Washington crest across the top.
It said that Ansel Okerlund's full rowing scholarship, tuition, room and board, would go to the next athlete on the list unless he signed and returned the acceptance form by noon Pacific time on Friday, August 22.
