Chapter 19: Move-In Thursday

Gail hugged me in the lot at seven in the morning, hard enough to hurt.

"Check the oil at the halfway stop," she said.

"Ansel's driving."

"Then he checks it."

She let go of me and looked at Ansel over my head.

"Bring her bed frame in one piece," she said.

"Yes, ma'am."

"Gail."

"Yes, Gail."

She gave me one more look that said everything and nothing, and she went inside before I could see her face.

Ann Arbor was hot.

It was the kind of ninety-four degrees that settles on a campus and stays.

The dorm had no air conditioning, a lobby full of crying parents, and an elevator with a handwritten sign that said "NO."

We carried my things up five flights.

Ansel took the boxes four at a time.

My roommate was already in the room.

She was a tall girl from Grand Rapids with a freckled nose, a ukulele, and a mother who kept straightening a poster that was already straight.

"You must be Lottie!" the mother said. "And this must be..."

"My friend Ansel," I said.

"Her friend Ansel," Ansel said, with a face so serious that I wanted to step on his foot.

The loft bed came in a box of metal pieces and a single sheet of instructions in no language I could read.
