Chapter 23: Thanksgiving
At nine-fifteen a Seattle number lit up my phone.
I answered before it finished the first buzz.
"Lottie," Ansel said.
His voice was rough and far away, and I sat down on the floor of the dorm hallway.
"Where are you?"
"In a hallway. Borrowing a teammate's phone." He took a breath. "Mine's at the bottom of Lake Washington. I dropped it off the launch dock Thursday morning, reaching for an oar. I haven't had a new one until tonight."
"Thursday."
"Thursday."
"My texts."
"I couldn't read them. I haven't read any of them. I didn't even know the team had sent out a notice until a teammate told me I was on a missing list."
I started to laugh, and the laugh turned into something wet.
"I'm sorry," I said. "I'm sorry about the call. I was so tired."
"I'm sorry I said it."
"You were right to be mad."
"I wasn't. I was a jerk, and I've been so scared for four days that you'd get my voicemail and think I did it on purpose."
"I almost deleted you."
"I know. Bea told me."
"Bea?"
"She called my dad's landline Friday. My dad called me at the boathouse. I've been on the phone with half of Port Clement."
I wiped my eyes with the heel of my hand.
"I love you," I said.
