Boone got us down the mountain in twenty-six minutes and has never admitted to the speed.
By two in the morning I was in the east bedroom with the yellow walls.
The bed had a plastic sheet on it and Peg's six-color blanket.
The doctor was on the road from Livingston, with a washed-out bridge to cross.
Maxine rolled up her sleeves.
"I delivered both my sons in this house," she said. "One in a blizzard. I can deliver a granddaughter in June."
"You said you've had enough boys."
"I did say that."
Orrin sat on the front porch with the dog.
I could hear his boots on the boards through the window every time a contraction let go of me, one slow step, then another.
Peg arrived at three, in curlers, with a pie.
"Why the pie?" I said through my teeth.
"I didn't know what else to bring."
"Get out."
She went, and I laughed in the middle of a contraction, and it hurt.
Boone stood at the head of the bed and held my hand.
"I hate you," I told him at four.
