Chapter 12: Torn

Finley pulled on his trousers and went downstairs ahead of me.

I took longer.

I buttoned my mother's blouse with my fingers shaking, and by the time I reached the front door, he had already opened it.

The whole street had come out.

The woman with the poodle stood on her porch with the poodle under her arm.

The man with the snow shovel was leaning on it.

The teenager had taken his headphones off.

Lester's car sat at the curb, with Lester and a bag of groceries beside it, frozen.

Roberta stood at the bottom of the steps in her camel coat, with a process server beside her holding a thick envelope.

Sabrina was in the back seat of Roberta's car with the window down, her face turned away.

"Mr. Hollister," the process server said. "I need Suzette Hollister."

"She's here."

"I'll take it," I said.

I came out on the stoop and held out my hand.

The envelope was heavy and cold.

I did not open it.

"You're being sued," Roberta said, in a clear, ringing voice meant for the street. "For breach of agreement. Finley and I were deceived. You promised six months of blood in exchange for this house. You made that deal in front of eleven witnesses. And now you hide behind a doctor's note."

"I haven't missed a donation," I said. "The first one is Monday."

"You've repudiated the contract."

"Don't use words you don't understand, Roberta."

"I understand them very well. I understand that a girl who signs a house over for nothing can sign it back for the same."
