Chapter 18: Night Nurse
Finley did not ask me what to do.
He took his phone from the nightstand and called the oncology clinic's after-hours line.
I heard him say my name, and my diagnosis, and "now."
I heard him say it again, in a voice I had only heard him use on vendors.
Twenty minutes later the pain had not eased, and I was making sounds I did not recognize.
The knock came at ten to four.
Lester let her in through the back door, in his bathrobe, with his glasses crooked.
She was a small woman in her fifties, in navy scrubs and sneakers, with a hard-sided bag on her shoulder.
She did not say hello.
She set the bag on the quilt, opened it, and looked at me.
"Suzette?" she said. "I'm the hospice nurse. Your husband called us. I'm going to make this stop."
"Please."
"Look at me. Under your tongue."
A small bitter drop.
I focused on my breathing.
Slowly, the hand loosened one finger at a time, and my eyes filled with tears I had been refusing to cry.
