He lay down beside me on top of the quilt, in his clothes, and I put my head on his shoulder.
The iron bed creaked under us, the way it always had.
Down in the street, a car went by, and its headlights slid across the ceiling and were gone.
"I'm cold," I said.
Finley pulled the second quilt over my feet.
"Better?"
"Yes."
"Is the pain..."
"It's quiet," I said. "The nurse says that's the medicine."
"Are you afraid?"
I thought about it honestly.
"A little," I said. "Not of the dying. I'm afraid I'll fall asleep before I say it."
"Say it now."
I turned my head on the pillow so I could see his face.
There was a lamp on the dresser, turned low.
It put a gold edge on his jaw and the gray at his temples, and made the lines around his eyes look softer.
He had not slept properly in a week.
