Chapter 22: What Eli Says
Eli took his phone out of his pocket and opened the email from Copenhagen.
There was a short note from the Foundation's secretary, in careful English.
There was one attachment, a scanned page, a little crooked, typed on a machine that had been old even ten years ago.
He read it standing up.
Then he put the phone away, because he didn't need it.
"I do," he said.
Forty people turned.
"Not to defend him," Eli said. "I want that understood first."
He walked to the middle of the floor and stopped beside the model table, with the envelope lying face-down between them.
"What Declan did cost me a place I wanted more than anything."
"It cost me the years after it. I'm not going to tell you it was small, because it wasn't."
Declan stood very still.
"Stay. Stay there. Whatever he says, stay."
"I'm not excusing it," Eli said. "I haven't forgiven it. I may not."
The reporter wrote.
"But I won't let a man who has used it for ten years be its judge."
