Chapter 26: In Words
Declan walked Eli to the train that night and said nothing for the entire walk.
His jaw was set.
His hands were in his coat pockets, and his eyes stayed on the wet pavement.
Without the voice, Eli had only a face to read, and the face looked like a locked door.
"You're pulling away," Eli said at the station steps.
"No."
"You've gone cold. You get the flat look when you're done."
"Eli."
"I understand. It's a lot. The meeting, and the boxes, and my mother's yard. You don't have to."
"I am trying," Declan said, through his teeth, "to say a thing properly."
Eli stopped.
Declan took his hands out of his pockets.
They were shaking.
"I've never had to say it before," he said. "You always just had it. I didn't need a mouth."
"Declan."
"I want to come home with you. I don't know if I'm allowed."
"I'm afraid you'll say yes out of pity, and I'm more afraid you'll say no."
Eli stared at him.
Declan's jaw wasn't cold.
It was a man holding a heavy thing very carefully with both hands.
"I read you wrong," Eli said.
"You were meant to."
"No. I was lazy."
He stepped close enough that their coats touched.
