Chapter 31: Sunday Again
Declan moved into Eli's flat on a Saturday, in four boxes and a rented van.
Maggie stood on the front step in her pajamas with her arms crossed.
She watched Declan carry a drafting lamp up the stairs.
"Four boxes," she said. "That's all of it?"
"I gave the rest to the loft's next tenant."
"The whole loft."
"It was a very nice sofa."
"Eli!"
"I know," Eli said, from the top of the stairs.
"This is a man who gave away a sofa for you, and I want it noted."
"Noted."
Declan set the lamp on Eli's desk.
Then he took an old pencil from his breast pocket and laid it on the kitchen windowsill.
It was a stubby yellow pencil with the end chewed flat.
Eli recognized it.
He didn't say anything.
He only stood there for a long moment with his hand on the doorframe.
Declan glanced at him and then away, and the tips of his ears went red.
By Sunday noon the flat had been quietly occupied.
Declan's shirts hung in the closet in a row.
His toothbrush stood in the cup next to Eli's, at an exact angle.
