Chapter 23: The News

We were ten minutes early, which had never happened in my life.

Captain's porch light was on.

So were the string lights over the patio, and the lemon tree had real lemons on it again.

Izzy was already at the table with a beer, because Mom had invited her too.

"Do you know?" I whispered.

"Nobody knows. She made me swear on my camera."

Dinner was fish tacos.

Mom didn't eat hers.

She kept picking up her fork and putting it down again.

Captain kept looking at her across the table and smiling into his mustache.

"Mom," I said finally. "You're scaring me."

"Don't be dramatic."

"You called at eleven at night and said we have news."

Izzy leaned in. "Are you pregnant?"

Mom choked on her lemonade.

"I'm fifty-two, young lady!"

"You said young lady to Izzy," I said.

"She deserved it!"

Lennon laughed so hard he had to put his head on the table.

Captain waited until we were all done.

Then he took Mom's hand on top of the tablecloth, where everybody could see it.

"My son missed my wedding," he said.

Lennon stopped laughing.
