Chapter 18: Dragon Blood

The sally port had a second door at the bottom of its stair, a low one, and Hadrian's ring opened that too.

Every queen of Aurend had used it to visit the dragon unseen.

I had forgotten, until my hand found the old brass latch.

The passage ran downward through warm rock, and the red glow grew until I could see my own shadow on the wall.

She was waiting.

The great head had lifted from the floor, and both gold eyes were fixed on the tunnel mouth.

"You came back," the dragon said in my head, and her voice shook the stone under my feet.

"I said I would."

"You said it in the dark. I did not believe it in the light."

"It is light now."

I went to her neck and looked at the chain.

It was bolted into the rock through a plate of black iron as wide as my chest.

In the plate were two keyholes, one above the other.

I put the flame key in the top and the iron key in the bottom.

My hands were steady.

They turned together with a sound.

The plate sprang open, and the great chain slid off her neck and fell with a crash that shook dust out of the ceiling.
