Chapter 24: Skyward
They crowned me at dawn on the Ember steps, with the snow gone pink and the whole city on its feet.
The steward had found my father's crown at the bottom of a chest of old linen, where the Regent had thrown it.
He carried it up the white stairs on a cushion with both hands.
It was a plain band of red gold, scratched and heavy, and it fit exactly.
"Kerensa Valdrath," he said, and his old voice cracked. "Queen of Aurend."
The roar from the Dragon's Court rolled up the stairs and shook snow off the canopy.
I stood in the winter sun, and the lords of Aurend came up the steps one by one.
They put their hands on the stone, which two men had carried out and set on a pillar of ice-white marble in the open air.
Each looked me in the eye, and each swore on their feet.
Before the first oath I had said it plainly: "No one in my kingdom will be forced to kneel again."
The white-bearded lord of the March was the first, and he swore in a voice like a rockslide.
