Chapter 16: Mind to Mind

"You knew," I said out loud. "And you knelt down anyway."

He shrugged with his good shoulder.

"You said you came to break me. I wanted to see if you'd do it."

"I just let you mark me."

"You did."

"That's the plan, Tiernan. That's his whole plan."

Then talk to me, said his voice inside my head. Not out loud. In here.

I didn't understand at first.

Then I did.

I lay back down very slowly, my eyes on the ceiling.

I thought of the crown, sitting on the dresser where I'd thrown it.

I thought one word at him, carefully, the way you'd step onto ice.

Theron.

Nothing burned.

The iron on the dresser stayed dark and cold.

My tongue was my own.

Theron paid for the tea, I thought.

Still nothing.

It came out of me in a rush after that.

All of it, in order, with nothing burning my tongue.

Every word I had swallowed for five years came up at once.

He didn't interrupt once.

His hand stayed flat on my back the whole time.

When I finished, my face was wet.

So the crown can't hear us in here, he said.
