Chapter 18: Champion
The courtyard went silent except for the fire.
Freya didn't step back.
I could see her knees shaking under her parka.
She didn't step back anyway.
"The old law," she said, "lets a challenged Alpha name a champion."
Theron's eyebrows went up.
"It does," the Speaker said dryly. "I've read it."
"Then I name my champion." Freya turned around. "Tiernan Ravensdale."
Tiernan stepped up beside her.
"Accepted," he said.
Theron looked from one to the other.
Then he looked at me.
His eyes were very pale in the firelight.
"Of course," he said. "The Wolf Moon, then. I look forward to it."
Ironclaw came down to the river that night.
From the top of the hall's bell tower you could see their fires.
At first there were twenty, strung along the far bank.
By morning there were sixty.
On the second day they moved out onto the ice itself, right in the middle of the river, right under the bridge.
Exactly on the border.
Not one paw over it.
"He's not breaking any law," the Speaker said at the morning session. "The middle of a river belongs to nobody."
