The order in the crown woke up.
It didn't burn yet.

Across the stone, Tiernan stood with his hands at his sides.

The whole hall was waiting.
The Speaker sat forward at the Council table with both hands on her cane.
Freya gripped the arms of her wooden chair.

I put my burned palms flat on it.
It was cold.

The crown purred.
That was the only word for it.
It was pleased with me.

The words were coming easily now, because they were the right ones.
