Chapter 4: The Words

"I'm not yours," I said.

"Then say it."

He spread his hands, right there in front of the Council table.

"Say the words. Four of them. I'll stand here and listen."

Three hundred wolves were waiting.

I had said those words a thousand times in my head.

On the bridge. In the fever. Every Midwinter in Iron Ridge, alone on Theron's porch.

I lifted my chin.

"I accept your..."

My throat closed.

It was like a hand had wrapped around the inside of my neck and squeezed.

I tried again.

"I accept..."

Nothing came out.

My wolf had both her paws planted in my chest, and she was growling.

She would not let me say it.

Not to him.

Not after five years of finally smelling him.

Tiernan's eyes stayed on my face.

He didn't look triumphant.

He looked like a man watching a door open that he'd thought was bricked shut.

Somewhere at the high table, Imogen laughed.

It was a high, bright, ugly laugh.

"Oh, look," she said. "She can't even manage that."

A few wolves laughed with her.

They had always laughed with her.

"Five years," Imogen said, "and she's still standing at the altar with her mouth open."

My face burned.

Then Theron's hand settled on my shoulder, light and warm.

"My Luna has had a long drive," he said pleasantly. "And we came here on business."

He stepped past me to the Council table and bowed to the Speaker.

"Ironclaw lays claim to the Hollow Valley," he said. "It was ours for two hundred years, until Ashenveil took it thirty years ago. We'd like it back."

The visiting Alphas began to murmur.

Tiernan turned on him.

"You walk into my hall with my mate on your arm and ask for my land?"
