Chapter 10: Not Yet

Ilaria's POV

He didn't sleep, and neither did I.

At one in the morning I came down to the courtyard in my nightgown and my father's cardigan, because I could hear someone breathing out there.

Dominic sat on the edge of the dry fountain in his undershirt, with the bandage glowing white on his shoulder.

There was no whisky beside him.

No phone, no cigarette.

Just his hands, hanging between his knees.

"You're supposed to be resting," I said.

"I tried."

"What happened?"

"I closed my eyes and I saw you holding the thread."

I sat down on the stone beside him, not close.

The courtyard smelled of lemon trees and cold earth.

The villa windows around us were dark, except one in the kitchen wing where a lamp was on.

I did not look at it.

"My underboss," Dominic said. "I called him a liar in my head all evening. Then I called myself a fool for it. I've gone around that circle for four hours."

"And?"

"And I know who loaded that casing."

I waited.

"I don't want to say it yet," he said. "I want to be sure before I say it, because when I say it, it's true."

"That's fair."

He turned his head.

"True thing for today. May I?"

"You don't need to ask."

"I want to." His voice was low. "The first week we were married, you took my gun apart on the kitchen counter. You thought I was asleep."

I went still.

"I remember."

"You cleaned it in the dark in your nightgown. Eleven pieces. You put them back faster than I ever could. And then you stood there holding it with this look on your face."

"What look?"

"Like you'd forgotten you weren't supposed to know how."

I swallowed.

"I lay there afraid to move," he said. "I thought, she's a spy. And then I thought, she's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen, and I'm in love with her, and I don't care what she is."
