Chapter 7: The Card Game

The Sapphire Suite had a round table for six and a window the size of a movie screen.

Three men in expensive gray suits sat on one side.

Desmond sat on the other, shuffling a deck.

Chips were stacked in front of every player.

Mine was the job of the carafe.

"Coffee, Birch," Desmond said, without looking up. "And smile, for once."

I smiled at the carafe.

It was a heavy glass thing on a hot base, and I decided I liked it.

I poured for the three investors first.

None of them thanked me, which suited me fine.

I stood by the sideboard and listened.

"Sixty days to close," said the oldest man. He had gray eyes and a ring with a blue stone. "That's what we agreed. Sixty days, and the owner's signature on the sale."

"The seventh," Desmond said. "Saturday week. The anniversary gala."

"Why wait that long?"

"Because the owner will be there. That's the first public appearance in four years, and she'll announce it herself. Six hundred guests, press, the whole circus." He smiled. "A sale announced in front of a ballroom doesn't get unwound by a board."

I kept my face as still as a plate.

My hands did not shake, because I put them behind my back.

"She'll announce it?" said the youngest man. He had pale hair and a nervous throat. "I thought nobody had ever seen her."

"Nobody has," Desmond said. "That's the beauty."

"I don't follow."

"You don't need to. The owner's office handles it. Her chief of staff has been very, very helpful."

The old man frowned.

"We have never met either of them," he said. "I've sent three offers and had three form replies."
